Monday Morning at 'The Ashtray' (beginner skate tricks)

I've been incorporating more skate content into the site just because that's what I've been into lately, but I'm curious, how many of you are interested in skateboarding? Have you tried it? Do you like to watch it? Would you ever want to learn?

My friend said her old boyfriend used to drag her to the beach to watch him surf, but she was only moderately interested and could never tell the difference between his black wetsuit and white board and some other guy's. But she said she liked to watch skate videos with her brother, even though she'd never tried it.

These tricks in the video are some of the beginner ones I've been learning. They're called:

Rock-to-fakie

Ollie

Fifty-fifty

I like the names. The first one, rock-to-fakie, means you roll up, put your front wheels over the edge, and then roll down backwards (skating with your tail forward in skateboarding is called "fakie"). The second trick, an ollie, is when you pop the board up with your back foot and cradle it in the air with your front foot so you can jump over or off of stuff. The last trick, a 50-50, is the most basic type of grind. A grind is when you slide along the edge of something with your trucks (the t-shaped metal part that mounts your wheels to your board) instead of your wheels. A fifty-fifty grind means your board is half on a ledge and half off.

  1. Fancy stuff. We're temporarily sworn off of skate parks at the moment. No doubt the memory of the snapped knee cap will fade, but right now the littlest boy is the only skateboarder we have. He's quite promising though! I do enjoy seeing your skateboarding, I shall look forward to seeing more of it. CJ xx

    1. That would probably keep me away for a while, too. Hope he's all healed up now and glad your youngest is enjoying it some.

  2. I find it really interesting! I have a soft spot in my heart for any sport, really, and I think it's particularly cool your learning as an adult. Plus my kid is pretty interested so, who knows, maybe it will actually directly relate to my life.

    1. That's cool you like sports so much. It must be exciting seeing what sorts of sports your son gravitates towards. Glad to know you don't mind skate content here :) Thanks for the feedback.

  3. My hubby is way into skateboarding and has been since he was little. I've always enjoyed watching him try new tricks and progress in his sport but I've been too intimidated to try it myself. I do love your videos though! It's making me seriously consider giving it a go myself. Thanks for being awesome and inspirational :)

    1. You could totally do it Tasha! Just invest in some pads and maybe consider taking a lesson after you've tried riding around for a little while (on a smooth, flat surface with no sticks or rocks). Both of those things have saved me from a lot of grief and falling I think. Thanks for the very sweet words :)

  7. Just bought my daughter her first skateboard. Every time we go past the skate park she goes crazy saying she wants to learn how to be the best at it! I can sense the desire in her already and she's only seven! Hope your doing well.

    1. That's so cute! I love hearing that more girls, like your daughter (only 7!), are interested and feeling inspired to do action sports. I think there is definitely more exposure and support for women in surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding nowadays and that these sports will have more and more female participants as time goes on. I hope you're doing well too.
