"Devon Heals Quickly"

My eyes are on the ceiling. I've got that couch-bound feeling.

My computer broke on the same day I found out my ankle was either sprained or broken (luckily I have my MacBook from college). That was last Friday. I'm still waiting on the X-Rays to come back. I hate even saying something in my foot could be broken, because I know it's not. I never thought it was. I just want to be sure it's not so that I know for certain that I'm taking care of it the right way. And most of all, I want to make sure I can get back to surfing and skating in an amount of time so short, I won't barely remember it someday. Although, I guess being laid-up is not the worst thing to remember because it makes you appreciate normal things like being able to lace your shoes up tight or being able to run back in to the house to get your sunglasses or being able to surf little waves all the way to the inside where the sand is yellow.

The truth is, I've been surfing anyways. Only once since I found out my ankle and heel bruises could be more serious than I thought, though. And it was totally worth it catching a few little insiders while our friends Ross and Jenny swam around next to us (sometimes it's about mental health, too).

I took my computer to the Apple Store today. I wrapped my hard drive in a baby blanket Nonny made for me, but when I went to unwrap it in the store, I realized it smelled like my halloween costumes did that time I left gourds, soon to rot, in the same box with them for a whole year (kinda like musty old garden dirt that's never seen the sun). I need to find out why.

The doctor gave me some physical therapy exercises for my ankle. One of them is to try to write the alphabet with my big toe. That was boring, so I started writing sentences like "I think some of 'Shark Week' is totally fake" and "Devon heals quickly". Let me know if you have any other ones (exercises or sentences).

  1. Ah man, being injured sucks! I overdid it at the gym on Monday and have been hobbling around like an old lady ever since - that'll teach me to go to the gym! I hope you feel better and that Devon truly does heal quickly :) xx

  2. I hope you heal fast and feel better soon! It sucks having to wait around to see what's wrong with you. Hopefully it's nothing serious and you'll be back on the waves and skateboard soon:)

  3. ICE, ICE ,ICE!!! Not the frozen veggies comfortably resting on the outer layer of skin but a five gallon bucket filled halfway. 1/4 of bucket with ice and 1/4 filled with water. Immerse appendage in for 12 minutes. It will feel like its burning but it totally helps the inflamation like no drug can. Try to do this twice a day for a few days, even while you cheat and surf anyway! Ask my kids about Dad's dreaded bucket O' ice! Love You!

  7. Poor you, it's horrid being out of action. The biggest boy had a nasty fall at the skate park on Tuesday and landed on his knee and face. His patella is snapped, and he has a plaster cast on from his thigh to his ankle. He'll miss his big Year 6 camp - a week of outdoor fun and the highlight of primary school. Also 8-10 weeks of football. The good news is the doctor said there won't be any lasting problems. He's finding it very hard to see the bright side at the moment though. I do hope you're completely better very soon, you have a lot of sympathy from us for your enforced couch rest. CJ xx

    1. Oh no! That's awful news. I'm so sorry to hear it. At least his bones will heal even stronger coming back from the break. I'm sure the camp and the beginning of the football season won't be the same without him. Good thing he has you to look after him. Here's to healing quickly!

  12. Hi there! I just stumbled across your blog from another. It stinks being injured, especially when it keeps you from doing what you love (or slowing down the process). When I injured my Achilles heel + couldn't hike for months, I did the same toe/foot exercises for strengthening. Sometimes I'd do them to the beat of different songs, just to change it up -- I like the idea of writing full sentences. I'll stick that in my back pocket for next time the Achilles flares :) Hope you feel better soon + can get back to your waves!

  13. A boy from my highschool who works as an actor/model was one of the "experts" on a megalodon show during shark week so yeah... Some of it is definitely fake.
