Playing in the Backyard and a Letter

I was just writing a letter (the word I prefer as opposed to long email) to my college friends. It was fun, and so, I thought I would write one to you too.

Dear reader,

Do you want to hear about the pictures above or do you want to hear about what's been going on in our lives lately? Since you won't actually be answering this question, I will decide. I pick both.

It's been dry and warm down here in SD; one of those winters where you get a gnarly wetsuit tan and can leave the doors open (sorry, I'm not trying to rub it in!). The other day I saw a policeman wearing shorts. It's been weird. I like some sort of distinction between seasons and because I listen to and repeat everything the weatherman says, I am concerned about "fire season". Also, I have not been able to wear the scarf I spent two months knitting.

All of this has led me to sort of giving up on winter. This morning I put our snowman decorations away and spent time making a playlist titled "Seasons: Spring '14". I have used almost all of the i-Tunes credit Scott got for Christmas. Ooops.

As you can see above, we've been pretty in to skateboarding lately. I have bruises on the tops of my hands, the sides of my feet and a video of me falling on my butt and crawling out of the skatepark to show for it. You can see it on Facebook. Skateboarding makes me feel young and old. It's something new to try, which seems good for my brain and spirit, but if I wind up in the hospital I'm going to be so.freaking.pissed

Last night Scott and I spent a few hours practicing ollies and "tick-tacking" back and forth in the backyard. A complaint from our neighbors may be arriving at any minute.

One of the main reasons I wouldn't be amused if this new passion involved hospitalization is because Basia, Phil, Scott and I are going to Mexico in April so Phil and I can attempt to make a surf movie. I am equally excited and terrified that Scott will be attending a bachelor party for my (now our) friend in Puerto Vallarta a few days before. I actually got a pretty sweet deal on our hotel thanks to my blog, which made me feel a legitimacy I haven't felt before. I was starting to wonder last summer when people kept saying "well you can do [insert weekday activity] because you don't work anyways" if this thing I spend way too much time on was legitimate or not.

Anyways, how is the weather where you are? If you are somewhere east and north of Las Vegas I picture big snowflakes plopping themselves down on your warmly lit windows. Is it annoying that I'm assuming this is a pleasant occurrence for you still? Take pictures for me.

p.s. if you want to write a letter in the comment section, that might be fun.

p.p.s. here is the start of the playlist I mentioned

  1. hahaha!! i need to learn to knit. it seems like every other week, we get a freak snow here.
    now, it's 80* - next week = wintery mix...
I have yet to have a patient in my hospital because of a skateboarding incident.
one was a broken leg because someone lifted him over his head like simba in the lion king.. close :)
I'll turn up your play list really loud tomorrow when I'm cleaning the house and getting ready for my night shift as a RN - and hopefully won't be taking care of any skateboarders.
I'm glad you at least wear pads :)

    1. Misty,

I am happy to hear you haven't had any skateboarding patients! This can only be a good thing, although I'm sorry to hear about the person with a broken leg. Bummer. Although, it at least sounds like a good story. I hope you like the playlist. I also hope you enjoy your weekend.

    1. Niken,

Maybe the saying should be "The snow is always whiter"? ha, I don't even know if that makes sense. I would like to see some white snow, however. We are going to a ski competition a friend is putting on at a local mountain soon. I have been wondering what they will ski on. Maybe picnic tables. Skiers and snowboarders seem to enjoy the tricks these days. So much so, that I wonder how much they really need the snow. Thank you for the compliments on the yard. If feel as though part of your backyard is the Indian Ocean and I am envious as well. I hope you enjoy your weekend.

  4. Dear Devon, Thank you so much for your letter, it was such a pleasure to read all your news while I ate my breakfast. I loved the photos you enclosed as well, especially the one of your cooking in your helmet and elbow pads. You wear them well. You look like a dab hand at skateboarding. We try it a bit here sometimes, and yesterday the bigger boys were doing skeleton bobs across the patio on their skateboard after watching the Winter Olympics (last week it was figure skating on the kitchen floor), until the biggest one rolled over his own fingers and the middle one put his weight on one end of the board and it flipped up and hit him in the nose. Then we did other things. Glad the weather's so nice with you. Here it's been so rainy - the wettest winter since records began they say, and so much flooding everywhere. Lots of streets with three feet of water and farms that haven't seen their land since December. I can send you some water if you need it. Well done on getting a good deal because of your blog, how fantastic to be profiting from it. It is very well deserved. Mexico sounds wonderful, no doubt you will have so much fun. I must fly now, and go and put the house in order - children are home from school this week for half term. I'm very envious of all of the green in your garden, California does look like such a beautiful place to live. Hope you and Scott have a good weekend, and thanks again for your letter. With love from CJ xx

    1. Dear CJ,

Thanks for the letter. Reading it while listening to some music started my day off just right. I enjoyed hearing about the boy's interpretations of the Winter Olympics, although I hope their bumps and bruises heal swiftly. Does dab hand mean I look like a dummy in my skate pads? I think I do, but I also know you always have the sweetest things to say, so I know it must mean something nice. I hope the wet weather will only make your garden bloom brighter and better than any year before too. I think we will have to be on a set watering schedule soon because our lack of wet weather. Fortunately, most of our plants are drought resistant. I hope you are enjoying your day and time with the boys. You always seem to have such a positive and warm outlook on things that I don't doubt that you are.

      Cheers,
      Devon

  6. You just got even cooler! Surfing and now skateboarding! You are one awesome lady, but be careful. Knowing me, I'd break something within 2 minutes:) You guys are going to film a surf video?! Crazy awesome. I love the song The General. It reminds me of being a camp counselor in Maine when I was in college. That song seemed to be on repeat at every camp function. That is awesome about the hotel. You are a legitimate force to be reckoned with:)
