January Not June: When to Visit California

June is gloomy. May is gray. During the early summer months there is almost a perpetual marine layer along the coast and temperatures, while comfortable, can be too mild for tanning and swimming; hovering, like the fog, in the mid to low 60ºs. Sometimes I love it, but it's no usually what people are anticipating when they visit the golden state. And somehow, no one seems to tell you this because people still come to coastal California in early summer expecting to get sunburnt and drink frozen beverages on the beach. They look disappointed when they have to buy sweat pants at the local surf shop.
January, while close to freezing at night, has random heat waves and is said to be our sunniest month of the year. Sure, we're all hoping for rain. We need it. But sometimes, it's much further away than the sun is this time of year.
And so, I think I should tell you, a good time to consider visiting the coast of California is January, not June.

p.s. other great months to visit? September and October. Sometimes November and December are really nice, too. February-June, sometimes even July, are hit or miss with sunny, warm, clear weather.

    1. July and August are nice, especially for camping at some of our national parks like Yosemite, but the coast of California from Baja to Big Big and the San Francisco Bay area can be cloudy and windy in the early months of summer. Of course, it all depends on weather patterns, but I wouldn't recommend planning a trip to California in June.

    1. I do like the fog sometimes too. It's very pretty and also kind of eerie. You are almost guaranteed to see some fog if you come in June. Actually, there's been many a 4th of July that we couldn't see the fireworks because of the fog.

  6. You've sold it to me Devon, I'll find my suitcase. The photo three from the end is wonderful, and so is the shell. The first photo is beautiful, you look happy in your own environment. California suits you! And thinking about it, I'm sure it would suit me too.

    1. This has been a weirdly warm year, so you never know. Maybe it'll be hot. California is kind of moody in the spring and summer.

  11. Good to know. Everything looks so gorgeous. We have 3 inches of snow right now in Ohio, but I can't complain because I don't have to go in to work so I'm cozy on the couch. :)

    1. April is tricky. It could be nice, it could be "freezing". Spring is pretty windy. It's kind of like winter arrives a few months late for us. Sometimes in March or April.
