The Taco Trek

My dad and Scott have talked about doing a "taco trek" through our town for a number of years now. This is San Diego after all, Mexico is just around the corner, and we have Mexican restaurants on almost every corner! In our town alone we have approximately 10 taco shops within two miles. So the idea of walking to all of them and trying one taco at each was born a few years back and finally put into action on Saturday.
You can always count on Pacific Coast Highway to deliver some interesting sights.
Out of about a dozen taco stands, (thankfully) only six were open. I managed to eat a total of two tacos during the trek, which has made it so I still want one when I look at these pictures now (I can't say the same for my dad and Scott). This one was a bean taco with fresh lettuce, two kinds of cheese, tomatoes and a crunchy shell.

The best was the first taco we tried, but I'm not sure if that had more to do with our empty stomachs or the actual taco. We decided crunchy shells were best and actually tasted lighter than the soft tacos doubled up with two tortillas. The walking made the eating easier (and healthier) and now we can say with a bit of authority which restaurant has the best tacos in town.
Now what's next? A beer at every bar? We have a lot of those too.

  2. I would be in taco heaven! Since I'm newly VB6 (vegan before six) this would have to be on a day when I throw caution to the wind because the bean taco looks amazing but I'd have to try out some of the authentic chicken or beef (and maybe pork) tacos. But the bean one, totally made me drool at the though! Most lunches for me are veggie wraps with beans tossed in!

What a great thing to be able to have THAT man options!!!!

PS is that a REAL Conch in that truck bed?!?!? HOLY HUGE!!!!

    1. I've never heard of VB6. Good for you. That's cool. Usually authentic taco stands aren't particularly vegan friendly, but you could get no cheese or just make an exception for taco trek day :)

p.s. I don't think that conch shell is real. That would be crazy!

    2. That WOULD be crazy... like day of the dinosaur crazy!!!

I rarely get taco salad because like you said they load it up with cheese etc. We had a friend intro us to VB6 - he's been doing it and has become almost completely vegan. You never realize how run down meat and cheese etc makes you until you don't eat it. I went to the in-laws for hamburgers on Sunday. One single hamburger put me down for the count for the rest of the day I had NO energy. How did I ever function before???

    3. wow! That's so interesting to hear. Yeah, I mention this in my "why I'm a vegetarian post", but I haven't been really sick in years and I also feel I have a lot more energy. It's awesome! And you're right, it almost something you don't believe until you try it.

  4. I love taco's! So I think that walking tour of yours would be right up my ally! Looks like you had a great time out with great food and great family time. I'll be visiting San Diego in April with my family, so I might have to get you to recommended a few places to eat while were there.

    1. you could do this almost anywhere in SD, I'm pretty sure. Especially in coastal towns because there is usually a high volume of taco shops.

  11. Tacos sound delicious, but they are hard to find in these here parts. I must find out how to make them, I'm sure they'd be a winner. Maybe you have a recipe..?
