10 Things I Learned This Year

Yesterday, on my birthday, I wanted to reflect on the things I have learned this year (and, let's be honest, things I'm still learning all the time).  Today, I decided to share it with you.

Here's my list:

1.) Life is a process. I am in process.

2.) Be honest with yourself about everything. Dissect your thoughts.

3.) It's ok to allow yourself moments to be still. Inspiration and clarity can be found here.

4.) Reading makes me a better writer, speller and conversationalist. It's important to read about a variety of things, even books, articles and blogs that don't necessarily correspond with my outlook. Be a sponge. Be open minded. Take it all in.

5.) Scott needs me, too.

6.) This country is remarkable and I'm happy we got to see it at a closer angle.

7.) Being perfect isn't a thing. I will always make mistakes. I need to accept that.

8.) I need to use more sunscreen on my hands. I need to do my physical therapy exercises for my shoulders.

9.) If you think you totally grasp someone or something look them over again, then do it again. p.s. Nothing other people do is really about you. For realz.

10.) I don't want to be famously successful like I thought I did, I just want to reach my creative potential.

Does any of this resonate with you? What is one of the most important things you've learned recently?

  1. Thank you for inspiring me Devon! In ways even beyond your understanding! Your words resonate in me...they are at my core! I am thankful that your 5 year old self crossed my path long ago...and that I get to see you in your grown self as an amazing prolific writer of purpose and inspiration to the world...you are a true gift!

  4. Happy belated birthday! Hope you had a great one! I think you learned some awesome things. I think for me, my lesson would be to not worry so much about what others think. Who cares?!

  5. Totally resonated with me, especially the one about wearing more sunscreen and doing my PT exercises!! In all seriousness, I do love your reflections Devon. I've been working hard on #1 and #3. It's hard work for sure. Happy Happy Birthday!

  6. Devon, you are one cool chick. I can't even remember now what led me to your blog (most likely another blog-ha!) but I am so glad I've stumbled upon it. #2 is the truth! I've come to realize that more with each passing year...and it's so important for our own spiritual growth. Best wishes to you in the year ahead, may it be filled with much love, good health and great happiness!

  10. "#9 - Nothing other people do is really about you."

I take everything SO personally, and therefore I'm always affected by the attitudes, opinions and moods of those around me. This is something I have to work on!

  11. This is an amazing list. I am at a point in my life where I am asking myself lots of questions, and not really coming up with many answers. I am just holding on, moving through each day, trying to work out where I should be going. What helps me sometimes is imagining what I would say to a friend if she asked me those questions. And asking myself where I want to be five, ten or more years from now. Having a list of things I want to accomplish and a list of things I have learned and am learning would probably help. Your list is very inspirational, and I think I will come back to it.

  13. I love your list. It all resonates with me! Especially the one about your husband needing you, too. I feel bad, because I always rely on him to be my rock. While he should be, I also need to remember that he goes through stuff, too, and sometimes just puts on a brave face so I don't worry. I also really liked the one about not being famous, but just reaching my own potential. That is so true. Just speaking your voice and getting your writing out there is amzaing. Think of all the people you've reached so far and how awesome we all think you are!

  14. Nothing other people do is really about you, I love that! I wish I would have really thought about that when I was younger! That is a great little nugget of wisdom! I have grown so much in the past years. I used to get offended so easily, mostly at work (high stress environment). I have learned to just brush off offenses and rude people! Who cares! Like my Dad always used to tell me, "Water off a ducks back". Just let it roll off and don't let it stick to ya!

I also like: Life is a process. I am in process. I need to remember I don't have to have it all figured out! Gods grace is sufficient for me each new day!

Love your blog and happy birthday!

  15. Love this. I really admire your openness. This is just so real. I think the number one thing I've learned about life is that it goes on, even sometimes when we don't think it is possible. We have to learn to adapt and make choices based on that idea, because very few things are ever permanent. For me, that also means I've come to love taking risks.
