Cover-Shot and Interview for the Reader

While Scott and I were driving the last leg of our road trip, I got a call from an unknown number. I picked up and tried to sound professional by saying "Hello, this is Devon speaking" just like mom and dad taught me when I was eight. It was a San Diego Reader (a local magazine) contributor named Elizabeth Salaam. Thanks to my friend Chris Grant, she heard about my goal to live my surfing and writing dreams and wanted to interview me for an article she was working on about "the incurable surf bug". It seemed such a fitting subject for me to discuss, as I have had said addiction for over a decade now. During the interview I was pretty nervous. Reading the article I was even more nervous. Part of my dream when I began pursuing surfing and writing was to gain exposure, now that it's happening, it is both exciting and a little emotional.
The article is out today in the San Diego Reader and by a stroke of luck, I made the cover too (it's a good thing Scott and I got lost in the cornfields of Ohio!). Here's an excerpt from the article. To read the whole thing click here or pick up the San Diego Reader from your local grocery store, library, drug store, or cafe (that is, if you live in the San Diego area ;)!
Thank you to all who have encouraged me! I feel pretty vulnerable letting everyone know what's in my heart. I really appreciate your support.

...A recent entry on The Mermaid Chronicles, a blog created by local surfer Devon DeMint (née Holloway), shows the surfer’s obsession in pictures. At the tail end of a cross-country road trip with her husband, DeMint posted a series of photos of herself standing in waveless locations (a lakeshore, a city street, a forest, a cornfield) holding her surfboard and looking lost. The final photo shows her riding a wave in green ocean water. The caption reads: “The beauty of this country has blown me away, but I’m always my true self at sea.”
As lovely and poetic as that sounds, DeMint admits there may be something less pretty (and perhaps more savage?) behind her need to surf. [MORE]
