Fall commercials are on, but I'm not buying it. It was 85° at the beach this weekend and even hotter in our house! I'll believe it's fall when I see it.
Some people don't think fall is noticeable in Southern California, but I beg to differ. Although the palm trees don't change color, the morning air is chilly, the afternoons are dry and the evenings are clear and crisp. Out in the ocean, the swell direction changes, the water cools down, the waves get bigger, lobster traps are scattered across the kelp beds and the wind blows offshore. I haven't seen any of that yet, so summer it is.
Here's what we did on our first weekend home....
Of course we surfed!
After mostly being away from the coast for weeks, I feel I have fallen in love with surfing all over again and can't get enough of it. When we weren't at the beach, we were at home watching surf movies. I feel like a grom again.

Since we were traveling for the last month, we were thrilled to eat in. Here are some of the things we made (mostly for breakfast)...
Potato Plate aka "Bowl of Life" (a bowl that contains food from all vegetarian food groups): potatoes (sauteed with a little olive oil in a pan), scrambled eggs, avocado, black beans, red onion, tomatoes (from our garden), topped with cheese.
Cheese, toast and more garden tomatoes with hot-salt and pepper. Plus, a little lemonade on the side to cool down a hot day
Burrito bowl with chips (a different version of what we call "Bowl of Life"): Brown rice, black beans, scrambled eggs, avocado, cheese, tomato and hot sauce with chips on the side.
And that was pretty much our weekend.
Does it feel like summer or fall where you live?

Happy Monday y'all!
(I think I can say y'all now that I've been to the south)

  1. Mmm I want all your food!
    It's fall here. :(
I'm so sad. Leaves are changing and it's cool at night and smells like fall. Sigh

  2. oh all the above dishes look divine. i shall make the burrito bowl for dinner tonight.

of course you surfed. of course.

  3. All these food photos have my mouth watering! Love it :)

  4. I will be making that burrito bowl with chips for dinner! =) Thanks for the inspiration

Your photos are always so beautiful :)

  5. I love that 5th picture! It's so beautiful!
And that burrito bowl looks amaaaazing. I may have to make myself some of that this week.

  6. Y'all! Love it!

How's your garden doing? I think we need a little picture update. Looks like you got some great tomatoes!

  7. Your food looks fantastic. It is leaning more toward fall here, but I want the 70's! I'm ready for sweatshirt and jean weather!

  8. This all looks amazing from the beach to the meals! And I agree with you about fall in SD. It might be subtle but its there and its such a nice time of year there!

  9. gorgeous pictures!
if i lived in a 4 seasons country, Fall will be my favorite.

  10. I have that same whicker storage/table thingy as you!

  11. Both of those egg dishes look yummy. I definitely miss the California lifestyle. People think it's all glitz and glam here in Vegas, but not so much.

  12. Not a bad-looking homecoming and weekend of surfing/eating!

  13. I absolutely love summer. I love the being able to swim without my wetsuit, I love going on trail runs and being drenched in sweat and not Oregon Rain - but there is something about fall crispiness that gets me every time. <3 fall!

  14. Yay, happy!!!
I am trading in my surfboard this weekend, hopefully for a 7'ish fun board. Any suggestions, tips?!

  15. Yay, you're reunited with your ocean! :)

And I love that last picture ... that is one of my absolute favorite meals. Especially with garden tomatoes. MMM.

  16. Gorgeous photos! And I agree, season changes in Cali are definitely noticeable! Looks like a fantastic weekend! And that food! yum...

  17. That food looks AMAZING. I'll be making that asap :) I bet it's so good to be home! It's almost fall here...the leaves have a hint of red and it's not quite as hot and humid for once. I love it.

  18. you make vegetariansim soooo appetizing!!
ps. never come to spain. you can get anything without ham on or in it. including chips. they're ham flavored.

  19. @Taylor Congrats! Sounds fun! Tips? Make sure you explain exactly what you're looking for and how much experience you have to the people at the surf shop. If paddling and getting into waves is something you struggle with, get a wider board (especially in the nose). Also, sometimes a shop will throw in free wax or a leash with a new board purchase. It never hurts to ask! Good luck!

  20. Such a cute blog! I am so jealous, i've always wanted to be a surfer girl!

  21. I want to order a Bowl of Lite and have it delivered please. I would love to hear you say y'all in person. lol. Sometimes it sounds so awkward from people who haven't been saying it all their lives. And you have more than likely answered this question somewhere on the blog before but what kind of camera do you use? And do you edit your pictures before posting them here? They are incredibly clear!

  22. Beautiful pictures, Devon! Looks like such a fun weekend. Call me crazy for not knowing, but what's a "grom"?

Fall is definitely more pronounced out East and it is starting to creep up on us here, which I must admit I'm really excited for.

P.S. You need to fill is in on recipes for all of that amazing food you posted pictures of. Can't just leave us all hanging (with our mouths open) like that!

  23. I'm so glad I found your's like a breath of fresh air. And I love all your stories about SoCal, travels, and vegetarianism. One day I hope to hold fascinating tales of life by the ocean.
