Wool Slippers Craft

This Christmas Scott and I decided to make our gifts for our sisters. I found these slippers in Martha Stewart's magazine. I had to wait until now to post this Christmas craft cuz, you know, they would have seen their gift. These slippers would be very useful in the coming winter months too. Aren't they cute?

Sewn Felt Slippers How-To

  1. Print slipper template. Enlarge or reduce template so it's the length of the sole of a flat shoe the recipient wears. Cut accordingly. Trace template outline onto felt with chalk pen. Cut out slipper and T-shaped slit, following template.
  2. Fold felt in half lengthwise, and stitch around the toe and open side, leaving the shorter heel edge open.
  3. Pinch heel closed, then sew from the top of the heel down. Leave 1/2 inch open for smaller sizes and 1 inch for larger sizes. Cut into the felt (1/2 inch for small sizes, 1 inch for large ones) to create a flap at the heel as shown, below center. A small flap of fabric should be left sticking out.
  4. Tuck tag in, then sew shut. Turn slipper inside out.
  5. Round off the tag with scissors, fold up, then sew to outside of slipper.
  6. Fold the cuff at the ankle, then sew cuff edge to slipper. (To accommodate a wider foot, trim a deeper curve along the top of the opening.)
  7. When sewing your second slipper, remember to flip felt so your T-shaped slit is on the opposite side.

Dark grey water washed over me as I paddled, biting my head, stinging my teeth. Offshore winds carried smoke from neighborhood fireplaces to my nose, reminding me of warmer places.
 Birds hunted for fish and I for waves. 
The ocean meant to us both more than gold. 
Finally my icy, inflexible fingers could no longer paddle. 
As I walked up the beach I thought:
 I hope I live like this forever.

Total Lunar Eclipse

By some miracle both Scott and I were awake Saturday morning at 5:30am and made it to the beach in time to see the lunar eclipse (we couldn't see the moon from our house at that hour). Here are some pictures Scott took to document the phenomenon. I guess we were meant to see it, and now you can too. 

Then I went for a surf. 
The colors of my board kinda match the moon during the eclipse. Groovy.

Cleaning House

Ok, so I'm kind of embarrassed to show you this. I like to think of myself as an organized "neat freak", but the following pictures will challenge that. At least you've seen the rest of my house, so you know that I'm usually not this messy. And, in my defense, this is our garage and our only storage space. And there are so many spiders in there! Alright, enough excuses. This mess, and consequently this clean up, led me to an important personal lesson about only allowing the past to remind me of good memories and lessons and not allowing it to create chaos in the present. 


I was dreading cleaning the garage, and it wasn't just because of the time, the headache or the spiders. I realized it was because I didn't want to awaken the dormant reminders that had settled within that littered space. 
There were cards, pictures and letters from my old students that would remind me of how inspiring they were and how important they made me feel. There were teacher documents that would remind me of some of the people I worked with and how unimportant I let them make me feel
I found honeymoon ticket stubs laying there and boxes that once wrapped wedding gifts.
The things from school reminded me of frustrating experiences that had happened and the things from the wedding reminded me of a joyful experience that was over, forever. I'd shoved anything I didn't want to deal with over the past 6 months, both physically and mentally, into that corner of our garage.  

But it was time for me to clean house.

Art supplies I can actually use now that they are organized.
Beach items I've collected for art sorted and displayed
 I needed to let go of the past so I could live in the present. I needed to clean the clutter out of my life. Cliche, I know, but also very true.  As I cleaned I began to move on. 
And when everything was in its rightful place-on a shelf or happily in my memories-I felt so much freer than before.

After Surf Soup

It's that time of year where you get out of the water and can't feel your hands and toes. And for those of you that don't surf, this may be the case for you 
 no matter where you go if you live somewhere cold (sorry. I really am jealous of your snowy weather, I swear).
 Therefore, try this tasty soup. It will warm you to the core! There are a lot of ingredients, but I promise it's not that hard to make. Just put on some holiday music and get out your best chopping knife. This recipe is really all about cutting veggies.

2 T. extra virgin olive oil
1 large onion (chopped)
3 carrots (peeled and chopped)
2 celery ribs (chopped)
1 yellow bell pepper
1 red bell pepper
3 cloves of garlic (minced)
1 tsp. chopped savory
1 tsp. chopped fresh rosemary 
1 tsp. chopped fresh thyme
1/2 tsp. dried oregano
1/2 tsp. dried basil
1/2 tsp. dried sage
4 cups vegetable broth
1 can chickpeas, drained
1 cup 100% vegetable juice (like V8)
1 can (28 oz.) diced tomatoes 
1 tsp. red wine vinegar 
Salt and pepper to taste 

1/4 cup fresh parsley
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
Zest of 1/2 a lemon

In a large pan add the olive oil and saute the onion, carrots, celery, and bell peppers until they loose their raw look. Add the savory, rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil and sage and cook together for another minute.
Transfer to a 5-6 quart slow cooker (you could probably do this in a big pot with a lid 
too, but I've never tried so don't blame me if you try it and it sucks).
Add the broth, chickpeas, vegetable juice, tomatoes, vinegar, salt and pepper. Cover and cook for 3-5 hours on high or 6-10 hours on low.

Add the parsley and lemon zest to the top and sprinkle on the parmesan cheese.

As you eat this delicious soup sit back and focus on something great you did today. Maybe you let someone have a wave you wanted. Maybe you let some have a parking spot you wanted. Whatever it was, good for you.

9. It’s good to be home. My mom washes my hair in the kitchen sink to protect my stitches from water and to keep me lookin fresh clean for Thanksgiving part 2 with Scott’s family.

Caramel Apple Cream Cheese Dip

Here is a great (and, most importantly, easy) recipe my mom gave me for a Thanksgiving appetizer. 
Thanks Mom!

2pkgs. cream cheese (softened)
2tsp. vanilla
2T. brown sugar
1 container of caramel apple dip (I used the Lighthouse brand)
1pkg. pecan bits
1pkg. heath toffee bits
Apples (I used organic fuji apples)

Let the cream cheese soften for 30 minutes. Mix the cream creese, vanilla, and brown sugar together in a large shallow serving dish until blended. Spread the cream cheese mixture into your serving dish. Pour one container of caramel dip over the cream cheese. Sprinkle generously with toffee bits and oven roasted pecan pieces. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with crunchy sliced apples.  Enjoy!

Kelly Slater & Letting Go: Part 1

    It couldn’t have been more than 50 degrees outside, but I was sweating as I watched the policeman scan my license and registration. The result-a speeding ticket for 80 in a 65. And my hopeful apology and remorseful tears fell ineffectively at his shoes as he handed me the proof.
 Even my lead foot wasn’t going to get me up Highway 101 fast enough to make Kelly’s 11th world title winning heat. As this realization reached my heart I wore the disappointment it brought all over my face. 
    The next morning I awoke on an air mattress at my friend Nicole’s apartment in San Francisco. My first thought: check the internet to see if the contest would run. Even though Kelly, now referred to as Ke11y, had won the world title the event still had five rounds to complete. 
    I called my friend Filip and arranged to pick him up so we could check out the contest. From what I could tell on the live web camera the waves looked nice, even friendly (not usually the case at Ocean Beach). We arrived at the expansive beach around 11am. I had every intention of not only watching the contest, but of surfing along side it. 
     We parked the car, trudged through the sand, stood at the shoreline and watched as the rain clouds opened up above us. I was too late again.
